Education

The Education Division at NICC offers two dynamic Associate of Arts (AA) degrees designed to prepare students for impactful careers in education, with a strong focus on serving Native American children.

  • AA in Early Childhood Education: This program is tailored for those interested in working with children from birth through age 8, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in Early Childhood Education settings.
  • AA in Paraeducator/Pre-Teacher Education: This degree is ideal for students looking to support K-12 education, with an emphasis on working in diverse educational environments and preparing for future roles in teaching.

Both programs are designed to provide a solid foundation in early childhood education and K-12 settings, with specific courses aimed at preparing students for careers in childcare, as well as roles within various governmental and educational agencies. Additionally, the curricula include general education courses to support a seamless transfer to a four-year degree program.

Students will work closely with their academic advisors to select the courses that best align with their academic and career goals, ensuring a personalized and rewarding educational experience.

Testimonials

“NICC has been a good support going into these online classes... My plan after my CDA is to go for my teaching degree and pursue my teaching career.”

Pearl Moniz-Tarin - CDA student

"As the Division Head of Education at Nebraska Indian Community College, I am deeply honored to serve a mission I care so much about. I truly love my job and this college—it’s a place where meaningful change begins. We are proud to have articulation agreements with Haskell Indian Nations University for a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and with Bay Mills Community College for a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education. These partnerships help us create clear pathways for our students to become certified teachers. My dream is to see more qualified Native educators leading in our community schools, and every day, we take steps toward making that dream a reality."

Viji Rajasekar - Education Division Head

“My journey at NICC started when I was a senior in high school... At the time ECED classes were offered so I started out with one class, and then after that semester was over, I really liked the class so I took two more. Eventually I graduated from high school, and I continued to stay at NICC! I enjoy it very much, and it’s very convenient for me!”

LaDawna Lovejoy (Isanti/ Umo n ho n ) - Early Childhood Education major

" NICC faculty offer personalized support for our students. We work with our students on a one to one basis and they have so many options for their education. They can get a Para certificate, a CDA certificate as well as an Associates in Early Childhood. We also have pathways for them to continue their education at Haskell to obtain a BS of Education (K-6) and at Bay Mills College to work on their Bachelors degree in Early Childhood. What is nice about those pathways is that the student never has to leave their homes to obtain the degrees and they have the extra help from our faculty here. "
