Have you taken classes at NICC before? Do you have a declared major/degree plan?

A: Yes- I have taken classes recently, and I have a declared major/degree plan.

Consult with your faculty advisor to help you get registered for classes. I can transfer you now. I would also recommend touching base with your Campus Student Services advisor (see directory).

A: Yes- I took classes a year or more ago. I don’t have a major/need to revisit my major/degree plan.

You can complete your online application by...

1.) Go to https://www.thenicc.edu

2.) Select ‘Admissions’

3.) Select ‘Online Application’ and complete the application. You can also find a tutorial on NICC’s YouTube page, which is ‘Nebraska Indian Community College- The NICC’.

4.) Set up a meeting with your Student Services Campus Advisor.

Are you looking to log into your NICC email, Canvas, or Empower?

A: NICC Email

All NICC students will be issued an NICC email. To access your email, select the following steps (www.thenicc.edu > Student E-Mail (top right) > Log in w/NICC username and password)     

  • Default NICC Email: 3 letter campus code, first initial, last name @thenicc.edu (Malcolm Miller at Santee Campus for example, sanmmiller@thenicc.edu).
  • Default NICC password: first three letters of first name and student ID number (for example, Malcolm Miller, ID# 98765’s password is MAL98765).
A: Canvas

All NICC students can log into NICC’s Canvas to access their online courses with the following steps (www.thenicc.edu > Current Students > Online Classes > Log in w/ NICC Email and password)

  • Default NICC Email: 3 letter campus code, first initial, last name @thenicc.edu (Malcolm Miller at Santee Campus for example, sanmmiller@thenicc.edu).
  • Default NICC password: first three letters of first name and student ID number (for example, Malcolm Miller, ID# 98765’s password is MAL98765).
A: Empower

All NICC students can log into NICC’s Empower to view their academic info. Like schedules, financials, etc. With the following steps. (www.thenicc.edu > Current Students > Student Empower Login > Log in w/ NICC username and password)

  • Default NICC Empower Username: first initial, last name (Malcolm Miller would be ‘mmiller’ in Empower)
  • Default NICC password: first three letters of first name and student ID number (for example, Malcolm Miller, ID# 98765’s password is MAL98765).

A: Computer

If you can login push ctrl-alt-del keys then select change password.

If you are unable to login contact your student services person or Justin Kocian to reset it.

A: NICC Email

If you are unable to login contact your student services person or Justin Kocian to reset it.

If you forgot your email password try your default NICC email and password? If you do not know your student ID number contact your student services advisor.

A: NICC Canvas

When you are logging into your NICC Canvas with your NICC email, you should see an option of ‘Forgot password’.  For more assistance send an email to Megan, NICC’s Instructional Designer, mmiller@thenicc.edu or Justin, NICC’s CIO, at jkocian@thenicc.edu

A: Empower

When you are logging into Empower with your NICC email, you should see an option of ‘Forgot password’. Complete the steps to recover it.

A: Microsoft Teams

Do you have Microsoft Teams downloaded to your computer/on your smart device?

Yes: You should be able to connect to your NICC Email and Calendar to click into the class before it starts. Then your Teams will open up and allow you to join.

No: For extra access, we recommend downloading Teams to your computer and smart device. I can help walk you through a few quick steps.

A: Zoom

Do you have Zoom downloaded to your computer/on your smart device?

Yes: You should be able to connect to your NICC Email and Calendar to click into the class before it starts. Then your Zoom will open up and allow you to join.

No: For extra access, we recommend downloading Teams to your computer and smart device. I can help walk you through a few quick steps.

What type of transcript? Official or Unofficial?

A: Unofficial

You can print an unofficial  transcript out from your Empower account. Here’s how:

  1. Log into Empower (To get there go to www.thenicc.edu > Current Students > Empower Login)
  2. Click on ‘Student Records’
  3. Click on ‘Unofficial Transcript’
  4. You can click the printable version (top right corner) to print or save as PDF in the print options.
  5. IF you cannot log into Empower – transfer to Student Services Advisor (info above) or view instructions in Student Orientation Canvas page.
A: Official

An official transcript must be done through NICC/Other institution’s  registrar.

A: Send an official transcript FROM NICC

You will need to fill out a Release of Transcript form from NICC’s website. Here’s a few quick steps:

1.) Go to the NICC website www.thenicc.edu

2.) Select ‘Alumni & Visitors’

3.) Select ‘Transcript Request Form’

4.) Complete the form and mail or drop your request and payment at any of the NICC campuses.

A: Send an official transcript TO NICC

Complete a transcript request from the institution that is holding your credits. Include this information to send to NICC’s Registrar, Troy Munhofen: Attn: Registrar, PO Box 428, Macy, NE  68039

Federal student aid is paid out 6th week and all other scholarships are paid out 10th week.  You can check your financial aid status in Empower under the Financials tab.  Disbursements will be received in  your USPS 4 weeks from the date of posting an Account Balance (ACTBAL). It’s important that your mailing address is up to date. This information will be available on your billing statement

To view your billing statement here’s a few quick steps:

1.) Log into Empower (www.thenicc.edu > Current Students > Empower Log In)

2.) Next select the ‘Financials Tab’

3.) Select ‘Billing Detail Summary’ for a detailed look at your financial aid.

4.) Questions? Contact your Campus Student Services Representative.

To update your mailing address, here’s a few quick steps:

1.) Log into Empower (www.thenicc.edu > Current Students > Empower Log In)

2.) Next select the ‘Settings’

3.) Update personal information and click the ‘Update Address

A:  Nebraska Indian Community College Code is 015339

A: Go to FAFSA Website and follow the instructions on how to reset your password. It’s important to note that you may need to access the email you used when last logging into fafsa.gov or a backup phone number. NICC cannot reset your password. FAFSA’s direct number is 800-433-3243. You can also use the live chat online.

Scholarships:

  • College Fund- Go to collegefund.org and complete the application for the next school year between February and February.
  • Cobell- Go to cobell.org to apply for their scholarship
  • Higher Education- Applications can be done through your Tribe’s Office of Higher Education.
    • Umonhon Tribe- 402-837-5357
    • Santee Sioux Nation- 402-857-2302 ext. 17
    • Tribe not listed- Contact your Tribe’s Office of Higher Education.
  • More scholarships- Check the scholarship page as well as your NICC email.
