Nuclear Regulatory Commission Grant to increase access to STEM courses


The NICC has been awarded funding from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for its Enhancement and Persistence into STEM programs.  The funding is a four-year award that will allow the college to increase the number of students enrolled in STEM related courses and who persist through completion.  The project will also begin to examine ways in which the college can develop additional course offerings as well as integrate cultural aspects of the Omaha and Santee Nations into curriculum.  The integration of culture into the science to coursework will assist the learners in making historical and cultural connections to modern science knowledge. 

In addition to hiring another faculty member for STEM coursework, NICC will also be able to hire part-time student STEM peer mentor tutors.  The college has found that students who have worked on campus—either through work study or other part-time opportunities—have better retention rates and wanted to include this aspect into the grant as an opportunity for students.
