Last month in Rapid City, South Dakota, Mary Provost, Henry Love Joy, Todd Stabler, Breland Parker, Ladonna Carrillo, along with Danielle and Renae John led NICC efforts at this year’s American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) student event and opened the experience with a POW-WOW. Our team boasted an outstanding three rounds at the knowledge bowl with the women’s team leading the way!
Renae and Danielle John performed an interpretive duet which captivated the audience with a humorous lesson on greed through stories of a mouse buffalo and a fox which netted fifth place! All enjoyed and participated in the volleyball tournament which lasted throughout the day and captured our team fourth place and a late dinner.
Many speakers from around the lands gathered to share inspiring stories of education. One woman spoke to her collegiate journey in quest for her dreams which spanned seventeen years over family and economic problems to become an instructor helping others. Country and Western Superstar Marty Stuart entertained and also spoke of his adopted Native American family who has helped him with sobriety and has enabled him to be a better man. The NICC would like to take this time to let our student members know that we are proud of your outstanding efforts and leadership in this collegiate representation!
