Omaha Language

The Umoⁿhoⁿ (Omaha) Center of Excellence
at
Nebraska Indian Community College

OUR MISSION

The Umoⁿhoⁿ Center of Excellence at Nebraska Indian Community College serves to work toward Omaha language revitalization in all its facets.  This includes the teaching of college level classes, community outreach and materials creation, documentation and archiving of Elder recordings, and language teacher training. As an integral part of the Umoⁿhoⁿ Community, we are engaged in grassroots-level language activism.  Related to our central mission of Umoⁿhoⁿ revitalization, we also seek to provide support to others engaged in similar endangered language work.

Who we are…
Alice Saunsoci, Director of the Umoⁿhoⁿ Center of Excellence and Elder Instructor

Alice Saunsoci is a speaker of Umoⁿhoⁿ, who did not speak English until 9 years old.  She has been engaged in community activism throughout her lifetime and Umoⁿhoⁿ language activism for the past 9 years.  She has taught at the local public school, the Alcohol Program, and at NICC.  She enjoys sharing the language and endeavors to inspire a new generation of speakers.

Ardis Eschenberg-Bad Moccasin, Ph.D., Linguist and Instructor

Ardis Bad Moccasin is a community linguist, living on the Umoⁿhoⁿ Nation reservation and working on language revitalization efforts here for the past 9 years.  She holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from University at Buffalo (S.U.N.Y) and also serves as the Academic Dean at NICC.  She teaches with Alice Saunsoci in the classroom to help a new generation acquire the Omaha language.
